The Compassion Soup Kitchen is recruiting!
We are looking for a new Whanau Community Worker. Our core aim is to support people to live with dignity in the Wellington Community. We do this through providing a breakfast and dinner service 6 days per week, a programme of fun and enjoyable activities, practical and social support and by spending time in Tupaia, our community garden.
The new role is for someone who is interested in working directly with whanau during our meal service, during activities such as fishing and gardening and to support them while volunteering or working at the Soup Kitchen. This is a broad role which requires flexibility, adaptability and skills in building relationships and working with others.
Specific qualifications, such as social work, are not a requirement. Rather we are looking for a people with the right attitude, approach and experience. Experience of supporting people who have been homeless or had mental health and addiction difficulties would be useful. However experience in the hospitality sector, working with volunteers or running education and activity sessions will also be looked on favourably. The successful applicant will need to also be practical and happy with undertaking tasks such as cooking, cleaning and gardening.
We welcome applications from people who have lived experience of any of the challenges that our whanau face. The majority of our whanau are Maori and we are particularly looking for people with knowledge of te Reo Maori me nga Tikanga.
This is a 30 – 40 hour position with days and hours negotiable, although there is the expectation that these will include working regular hours on Saturdays. The Soup Kitchen working day is from 7am – 6pm, Monday – Saturday.
